Panderetas

This dance is also called "Panderetas de Amor". Panderetas means "tambourines" in Spanish. This dance portarays a heavy Spanish influence. Of the two available versions of this dance, this one is more Hispanic in execution. The dance is from Manila.

Bayanihan researches in the early 1950s discovered this dance in the capital city and has been included in their Maria Clara Suite since then. The second version of the Panderetas is the Yuletide folk dance from Tanza, Ilo-ilo called "Las Panderetas". The music used in the later is a typical Visayan "daygon" similar to the pastores musics used in the pastores traditions in Bikol, Cebu, Leyte and Samar.

Pockets of cultural minorities live in the style of their fore bearers in the hills and mountains throughout the Philippine Archipelago. The hillside and interior of Mindanao in the southern part of the Philippines are inhabited by non-Christian Filipino tribes whose culture and animistic beliefs predate both Islam and Christianity. Dance for them is a basic part of life, still performed essentially "for the gods." As in most ancient cultures, unlike the Muslim tribes in their midst, their dances are nonetheless closely intertwined with ceremonials, rituals, sacrifice, and life.

LAWIN LAWIN The Lawin-Lawin from Habing Sayawit features males of the Bagobo tribe mimicking high flying eagles or Lawin. Tribal shields are used to imitate wings of an eagle as it swoops and glides through the open sky.

Kadal Taho *

Tribe: T'Boli

Origin: Lake Sebu, South Cotabato

The T'boli tribe lives among an assortment of wildlife, most notably birds. Kadal Taho, which means "True Dance of the T'boli," recounts a story of a flock of sister birds that wandered too far in search of food. Finding themselves lost, one of the birds breaks her leg and loses her ability to fly. The flock encourages the injured bird to test her wings once more and they successfully fly to safety.
This is a dance-drama centering on a bird with a broken leg, coached by the rest of the flock in an effort to try her wings and fly again. In the end, the flock of Blilah birds fly again.

Blit B'laan is a courtship dance of the B'laan people of Davao del Sur in which the dancers mimic the behavior of forest birds in the mating season. Two male dancers that represent richly-plumed male birds eye three females. The females try to hide from the males, burying their heads under their wings, which are represented by their malongs. Still, the aggressive males pursue them.

Makatod (also spelled Makatud), a rite of passage of Tagabawa sub-tribe of Davao-Mandaya focuses on a young prince who is born high by courtiers and given a place of honor by his people. A notable prop in this dance is a dried palm frond shredded to tiny separate pieces. The palm leaves give a faint hissing sound when shaken.

Kasanggayahan Festival 2012 Cultural Show

Banga
(Kalinga) The Banga is performed during feasts as a way to entertain guests. It derived its name from the earthen pot called banga, which are stacked and carried on the heads of the females while dancing.

Paseo de Iloilo *

Origin: Iloilo (Visayas)

One of the most sophisticated courtship and flirtation dances of the Spanish era. The gentlemen compete among each other to win the heart of the dalaga, or young lady, by exemplifying chivalry, grace, and confidence.

Panderetas

Panderetas resemble tambourines but without the cymbals. These are handheld drums with stretched animal skins covering a round wooden frame. These may also be called "panderos".

Pandanggo sa Ilaw is a popular dance of grace and balance from Lubang IslandMindoro in the Visayas region.
This particular pandanggo requires skill in balancing three lighted oil lamps or tinghoy, one on the head and at the palms of each hand.

Oasiwas is a dance in which an oil lamp is balanced on the dancer's head as he swings around lighted lamps wrapped in porous cloth or fishnet. The name of the dance comes from thePangasinense word for swinging. The dance is performed by fishermen of Lingayen when celebrating a good catch. It is accompanied by waltz-like music.

The ladies gracefully manipulate the Aper (apir) or fan, while emphasizing their small steps, or "kini-kini", which is a sign of good upbringing.

RITWAL NG BABAYLAN, ALAY SA KALIKASAN

Babaylan is a Visayan term identifying an indigenous Filipino religious leader, who functions as a healer, a shaman, a seer and a community "miracle-worker" (or a combination of any of those). The babaylan can be male, female, or male transvestites (known as asog, bayoc, or bayog), but most of the babaylan were female.

The babaylan in Filipino indigenous tradition is a person who is gifted to heal the spirit and the body; a woman who serves the community through her role as a folk therapist, wisdom-keeper and philosopher; a woman who provides stability to the community’s social structure; a woman who can access the spirit realm and other states of consciousness and traffic easily in and out of these worlds; a woman who has vast knowledge of healing therapies"

Angela Dio, a senior member of the dance troupe was chosen and crowned as Miss senior among the thousands of beautiful young ladies overflowed in the Sorsogon multi-purpose Gymnasium. Clad in her glamorous evening gown she spent the night partying as she imbibed the night's festivity.

A prom, short for promenade, is a formal (black tie) dance, or gathering of high school students. It is typically held near the end of the senior year. It figures greatly in popular culture and is a major event among high school students. High school juniors attending the prom may call it Junior Prom while high school seniors may call it Senior Prom. In practice this may be a combined junior/senior dance. At prom, a Prom Queen and Prom King, Miss Junior, Mr. Junior, Miss Senior and Mr. Senior may be revealed. These are honorary titles awarded to students chosen in a selection of stand-out beauties and glamor during the night.
